How do I get rid of mould on my walls?

Mould growth is one of the side effects of a damp problem in your home and is most frequently found on walls and ceilings. Here's how you can get rid of mould.

Is your home in Dorset or Hampshire suffering with a bad case of damp caused mould? Not only is mould an eyesore, it has also been found by the NHS to be bad for your health, so it’s only natural that you’d want to remove it as soon as possible. Whatever your problem with damp, we have the damp proofing solution. Contact us  on 01202 737739.

Step one: identify the source of the mould

Mould growth is the result of an underlying damp problem in your home, so the first step you should take is to diagnose whether rising damp, penetrating damp or condensation s causing your mould problem.

If you begin to remove the mould before resolving the underlying damp problem, then you will only give yourself a temporary relief, as it will likely resurface again; tackling the problem at the source is the only way to ensure that your home remains mould free.

If you live in Dorset or Hampshire and are struggling to identify the cause of mould on your walls, we can help! Our experienced team can carry out an inspection to identify the damp problem and provide a solution that will eliminate both damp and the resulting mould. Contact us on 01202 737739.

Step two: Eliminate the source of damp

Once you have identified which damp problem is resulting in mould growth on your walls or ceiling, then you can take steps towards treating it. Many common causes of damp are easy to solve yourself; leaking caused by blocked gutters can be easily rectified by cleaning them out and condensation can be reduced by using a dehumidifier or otherwise improving ventilation.

However, many damp problems are more complex and will require specialised tools and an experienced hand from property preservation experts such as ourselves. It can be a lot less stressful and lead to more guaranteed results having a specialist handle your damp problem rather than attempt to undertake something you don’t fully understand.

Step three: Remove the mould from your wall

Once the cause of damp has been eliminated, you can finally begin to remove the mould from your walls! The NHS recommends that you do not attempt to remove mould caused by sewage or contaminated water, or areas covering over one square metre due to potential safety hazard.

If your mould problem is due to these reasons or larger than this area, it is wise to get a professional to help you. Click here for further advice on how to safely and effectively remove mould from your walls.
