How to safely remove mould from your walls

Wear the right gear

Mould spores are nasty and can cause skin and eye irritation as well as breathing difficulties, so whilst removing mould you should ensure that you are wearing long protective rubber gloves, a mask that covers your nose and mouth, goggles and long trousers and sleeves.

Seal the room

You should open windows and close the doors to the room, sealing gaps underneath doorways where possible with plastic sheets whilst you are attempting to remove mould in order to prevent the spores from spreading to other areas of your home. You can also cover your furniture for added protection against mould spores.

Use the right formula

There are plenty of cleaning products available on the market specifically for killing and removing mould; however, if you don’t want to invest in one of these, then you can fill a bucket with water and a weak detergent such as soap used for hand-washing or washing up liquid. Use a cloth or rag that you are happy to throw away when you are finished.

Remove the mould

The wall should be moisture free before you begin removing signs of mould. Dip your cloth into the soapy water and carefully begin to wipe at the affected areas; try not to aggressively scrub at the wall, as this could release mould spores into the air and you want it to remain as contained as possible.

Once you are finished cleaning away the signs of mould, use a dry cloth to dab away the moisture left on the wall – remember, damp is what put the mould there in the first place! Seal your used cloths in a plastic bag and throw them away before finally vacuuming the room and remaining furniture to pick up any stray mould spores.
